The use of plaster, a decision made for its material likeness to human bone, singed burlap, and melted wax are ephemeral materials which speak to active transformation. The plaster itself, was sculpted as it crystallized. In other words, it was not poured into a mold, or treated as a fixed surface. In this regard, I was working with an active material. Just as smoke dissipates, or wafts through the air, so to the action of the works invention is done unconventionally through the embrace of the ephemerality, and active transience of the material. The act of burning the burlap, which is held onto the work melting palm ash wax, embody the notion of simultaneously a beginning and an end. The rope, being symbol both of continuity, but also being bound. The moment of destruction as being the moment of invention. This idea I borrowed from nature, as seen in the destruction and regeneration after a forest fire, or perhaps even, a supernova. To me, this is not unlike the function of memory.
